On January 8th, 2011 the city of Tucson was forever changed. Less than 2 miles from my home, a shooter opened fire at a Safeway grocery store. The media reveled that the shooter had handwritten notes indicating a plan to assassinate US Representative Gabrielle Giffords. In his attempt approximately twenty individuals were shot. Within the minutes and hours after the first shot was fired six individuals were reported as deceased.
In the two weeks since the shooting I have been floored by the community response. It seems near daily still there are memorials and community gatherings. I had the honor of being part of the United We Run 5K organized by the local CrossFit communities in Tucson. This past Sunday, more than 1,200 people gathered to run and walk in memory of those lives lost, in support of those affected, to grieve together, and to show that Tucson is strong and will band together in hopes of finding peace. Being involved in this was an amazing experience, it was emotional and overwhelming to see and feel the support pouring out of everyone.
I can’t imagine being a parent and trying to explain to my child how this could happen. Seeing the children, around the age of one of the victims, running and walking with their parents was so moving. How awesome to see such young children involved the best way the can.
Have a beautiful week!
